“Not the image of the world, only the essence of the world” - Lajos Kassák wrote in his article 'Picture Architecture'.

Kassák emphasized the latter, in the context of representation versus abstract expression. All this a hundred years ago. This process began then and has since been fulfilled in painting. Photography, on the other hand, with one or two great exceptions (e.g., László Moholy-Nagy or György Kepes), it has been remained well-represented in its descriptive character.

I would like to return to the basic position of the above-mentioned artists, in order to contribute to a certain extent to the transcendence of photography to its essential side with my Book Variations series. I believe that this medium is inherently more than a direct representation, and that in our time we have all the possibilities to create abstract/concrete images.

The basic idea of the series is to create different results by building from the same elements. Experiments. Variations on a theme.

The tendency to create unity has been present in my art from the beginning. One of its most important visual manifestations is symmetry. The repetition, the interweaving, the circular arrangement of the images, gives them a sense of movement, counterbalanced by the serenity of perfect symmetry.

The images are all photomontages. The background is uniformly neutrally lit grey photograph of me, over which I have superimposed several layers of a photograph cut of the multi-band black frame of the cover of László Moholy-Nagy’s book, 'From Paint to Light'. I rotated the layers, shifting them on top of each other. This is how the different variations came about.
